Golam said they arrested these additional four after conducting searches in separate parts of the city
Golam Ruhul Kuddus, spokesperson of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police (RMP), has said that his team arrested four perpatators on Monday, bringing the total number of arrestees to nine, all accused of throwing the principal of Rajshahi Polytechnic Institute into a pond.
Golam said they arrested these additional four after conducting searches in separate parts of the city.
Police asked the court for a five-day remand, but the court denied them this.
The more recent arrestees are Mehedi Hasan Ashik, 22, Mehedi Hasan Hira, 23, Nabiul Utso, 20, and Nazrul Islam, 23, son of Khandakar Alamgir, from the Sotobongram area.
A group of ‘BCL activists’ threw Rajshahi Polytechnic Institute Principal Farid Uddin Ahmed into the pond on the Institute campus on Saturday afternoon in reprisal for his refusal to allow two students, including joint general secretary of the Institute unit of the BCL Kamal Hossain Sourav, to fill in forms for examination, after inadequate class attendance.
The incident was captured by a surveillance camera.
It is clear in the video footage that at least 10 people are taking the principal towards the pond. Some of them are holding his hands while others are pushing him from behind.
They threw the principal into the pond within seconds and fled the scene.
Shortly afterwards, other students, officials and employees of the Institute rescued him. That night, Principal Farid Uddin filed a case with Chandrima Police Station over the incident.
Meanwhile, students of the Institute continued their protests for the 2nd consecutive day, insisting on the acceptance of their six demands, including that those involved in the incident be immediately arrested and subject to exemplary punishment
The other demands are that the accused students be suspended, that student politics be banned on the campus, that outsiders cease being allowed entry to the campus, and that security for all on the campus and a healthy academic environment be ensured.
