A childless couple bought the daughter of a destitute woman for a sum of Tk20,000
An 11-day-old child was sold for Tk20,000 to childless couple in Sharishabari upazila of Jamalpur.
The girl, who is the daughter of Nazma Begum, 23, was sold in Mazalia Paschimpara village, under Doail union of the upazila, on Wednesday afternoon.
The incident sparked curiosity among the locals and drew a large crowd to Nazma's house.
According to Nazma, she got married to Miraz Ali while working as a garment worker in Sayedabad of Dhaka. However, Miraz died soon after, leaving a six-month-pregnant Nazma behind.
Nazma returned to Jamalpur and became a beggar. She gave birth to a daughter on October 20 at Jamalpur General Hospital.
When she was in the hospital, Nazma became acquainted with Fahima Begum, wife of Abdul Hanif of the same village. Touched by Nazma's sorrowful story, Fahima took Nazma to her house on October 27.
Not finding any other recourse and left without any money,Nazma, recovering from her birth, sold her 11-day-old to childless couple Saiful and Marufa from Malipara village under Pogoldigha union, for a sum of Tk20,000.
Asked about the incident, Marufa said: "I bought the child by paying Nazma a sum of Tk20,000, from Fahima's house."
Union Parishad member Montu Mia said Nazma left after receiving the money.
"A destitute woman called Nazma sold her 11-day-old daughter, as she would not be able to provide for her, and left after receiving the money," he said.
However, Sharishabari police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) MdMazedurRahman said he did not hear of the incident. On the other hand, the secretary of Doail union Shafiqul Alam confirmed it.
