Ex-Chhatra League leader held over Bhola housewife gang rape

The woman was gang raped, reportedly by five men, in front of her child

Police arrested a former leader of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) over the gang rape of a housewife at Char Piyal area in Monpura upazila of Bhola district.

The detained is Nazrul Islam, 30, the former president of Chhatra League's Dakkhin Sakuchia union unit, was arrested from Sakuchia area of the upazila on early morning, yesterday.

Sakhawat Hossain, officer-in-charge (OC) of Manpura police station, confirmed the matter around 12:15am.

The OC said: “A team of police arrested Nazrul while he was attempting to flee to Hatiya on a speedboat.”

“And multiple teams of police are making separate drives to different areas to catch the rest four accused as well," he added.

Dr Rathindranath Roy, civil surgeon of Bhola, said: "The medical check-up of the woman has been completed and we sent the reports to the district's superintendent of police (SP)."

On Saturday, the woman was gang raped, reportedly by five men, including the former Chhatra League leader, in front of her child.

The gang rape

The OC said that on Saturday, the victim with her two-year-old child was heading to her father-in-law's house in Monpura upazila from Dakkin (South) Aicha area in the district's Charfsahon upazila on a speed boat via Betua launch terminal.

On her way, the accused Belal, Rased, Kiron and Shahin moored the speed boat at Char Piyal area where they raped the woman in front of her child.

Later, Nazrul, the owner of the speed boat, joined the gang, with another boat and also raped the woman. He also filmed the incident, and threatened the victim of spreading the video on Facebook if she disclosed the incident to anyone.

However, the miscreants fled the spot sensing the presence of the police, who came to rescue the woman on a tip-off.

Later, the victim filed a case, accusing the five, with the Monpura police station, the OC confirmed.
