5 killed in road accidents in 4 districts

The accidents occurred on Monday

At least five people were killed in four separate road accidents in Jhenaidah, Lakhshmipur, Rangpur, and Comilla on Monday.

In Jhenaidah, a 12-year-old minor was killed when a bus ran him over in front of the Abdur Rouf  Degree College in the Dak-Bangla area of  Sadar upazila on Monday morning.

The deceased was identified as Sumon Hossain, 12, son of Mofizul Islam of Potahati village in Sadhuhati union of the upazila. He was a child labourer in a local garage, sources said.

Speaking to Dhaka Tribune, Jhenaidah Sadar police station Officer-in-Charge (OC), Moin Uddin said: “A Dhaka-bound Royal Paribahan bus ran Sumon over when he was trying to cross the road being chased by a dog.

“We seized the bus but the driver is still on the run,” the OC added.

In Lakshmipur, a pedestrian was killed when a motorcycle hit her in Rakhalia on the Raipur-Chowmuhani Highway in the afternoon.

Sources said the deceased, Shahinur Begum, 32, was crossing the road when a speeding motorcycle hit her, critically injuring both Shahinur and the motorcyclist.

The unidentified motorcyclist fled the scene. Locals rescued Shahinur and took her to a nearby hospital where the duty doctor declared her dead, confirmed Raipur police station Officer-in-Charge, Tota Mia. 

In Rangpur, at least two were killed and another critically injured when a bus hit a truck in Boldipakur on the Rangpur-Dhaka Highway in Mithapukur upazila at dawn.

Baradarga Highway police outpost Sub-Inspector (SI) Afzal Hossain confirmed the incident to Dhaka Tribune and said: “The Dhaka-bound Nabil Paribahan bus hit the wood-laden truck from behind, killing the truck driver and a day labourer on the spot.

“The deceased and the injured are yet to be identified. However, we seized the bus and are trying to arrest the driver who is on the run,” the SI added.

Informed by locals, the fire service recovered the dead bodies and took the critically injured man to Rangpur Medical College Hospital, confirmed Station Master of Rangpur Fire Service & Civil Defence, Akhil Barman.

In Comilla, a female day labourer was killed when a bus ran over her in the Chowmuhani area on the Kandirpar-Paduar Bazar road in the evening.

The deceased was identified as Hafeja Aktar Hashi, from Gaibandha district. She worked as a day labourer at Comilla EPZ.

Comilla EPZ police outpost SI Mainul said Hashi was returning home from work when a Shah-Ali Super Paribahan bus ran over her coming from behind.

The body was taken to South Comilla police station, added the SI.
