Suspected robber killed in Narayanganj ‘gunfight’

He was a suspect of several robbery cases

A suspected robber has been killed in a reported gunfight with the police at Hauzadi in Araihazar upazila of Narayanganj district.

The incident occurred at Ilumdi area of Highjadi union of the upazila around 3:45am on Sunday.

The deceased is Abu Said alias Choitka, 35, son of Nazim mia of Zokardia village of Mahmudpur union.

Four members of police -- Sub Inspectors (SI) Siraj and Sabuj and Constables Liton and Rafiqul were also injured.

Police also recovered a firearm from the scene.

Confirming the matter to Dhaka Tribune, Araihazar police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Nazrul Islam said: “Acting on a tip-off, a team of police raided Said’s house and arrested him. Based on his information, police conducted another raid on nearby Ulmudi area.”

“Sensing the presence of law enforcement, the miscreants opened fired and tried to snatch Said. We fired back in retaliation.”

Said was critically injured during the gunfight, while his associates managed to flee the scene.

Later, he was taken to Araihazar Upazila Health Complex, where the doctor on-duty, Maniruzzaman, pronounced him dead.

Said was a suspect of several robbery cases in Araihazar and Sonargaon police stations, the OC added.

A case is yet to be filed regarding the matter.
