Eight homesteads of Dangapara village in Sonaray union of Nilphamari Sadar were burned to ashes after a fire broke out on Saturday morning.

Although there was no human casualty, the victim families claimed they suffered a loss of around Tk25 lakhs as 32 of their properties including barns, and homes were gutted by the fire.

Locals said the fire started from a rice husking machine of the area. A Fire Service and Civil Defence unit of the Uttara Export Processing Zone (EPZ) of Nilphamari were able to douse the fire in an hour-long effort, however, residents of the area lost their harvest, furniture, and money, said Sonaray Union Parishad chairman Golam Mostofa.

 "The victim's are currently living under the open sky, Upazila administration was informed about the incident," he added.

 Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Elina Akter said: "I have requested the union parishad chairman to provide a list of the victims. They will be compensated with relief on Sunday (today)."
