A Bangladeshi youth has died after a group of robbers set a shop on fire in South Africa.

The incident occurred at Orange Farm township under Gauteng province on Monday night.

The deceased is Imran, 28, son of Dudu Mia Khalifa, hailed from Shibchar upazila under Madaripur district.

He died at a local hospital in Orange Farm on Wednesday morning.

Another youth from the same village, Abdur Rahim, also received severe burn injuries, in the same incident.

According to the family, Imran and Rahim were shopkeepers in South Africa.

“On Monday night, a group of robbers looted the shop where Imran and Rahim worked. The robbers locked them inside, and set the shop ablaze,” Imran’s brother-in-law Rubel Matobber said.

Later locals recovered their bodies and took them to a nearby hospital, where Imran died. However, Rahim is still undergoing treatment, he added.

Rubel requested the government to bring Imran’s body back to Bangladesh.

“All our dreams were burnt with Imran, but the government can save us,” he pleaded.

Madaripur Deputy Commissioner Md Wahidul Islam told Dhaka Tribune: “My condolence is with the deceased’s family.

“If Imran’s family formally requests us, then we will try our best to bring back his body.”
