Suspected robber killed in Feni ‘gunfight’

He was wanted in 37 criminal cases

A suspected robber has been killed in a reported gunfight with the police at Saraitkandi village in Sonagazi upazila of Feni.

The incident occurred around 3am on Wednesday, reports UNB.

The deceased is Iqbal Hossain, son of Abdur Rob of the village.

Feni Detective Branch (DB) of Police Officer-in-Charge (OC) Ranjit Barua confirmed the matter.

He said: “Acting on a tip-off, members of Feni DB police and Sonagazi police station conducted a joint drive in the area.

“Sensing the presence of law enforcement, the suspects opened fire. The police retaliated in self-defence, leading to a gunfight.”

Iqbal was injured during the gunfight, while his associates fled the scene. Later, he was taken to a local hospital, where the on-duty doctors pronounced him dead.

“Iqbal was a leader of an inter-district robber gang, and wanted in 37 criminal cases,” Moin Uddin, OC of Sonagazi police station, said.

Three police officials were injured during the gunfight, the OC furthered.

A gun and three bullets were recovered from the spot.
