2 injured in Awami League infighting over sand lifting

The injured Swechhachasebak League Convener Jubayer Hasan Jony, 26, received bullet injuries to his right leg and Jubo League activist Sujon, 28, received injuries by sharp weapons on his left arm

Two people were injured in a clash between two factions of Awami League in Fultala of Rajshahi town yesterday morning. 

The injured Swechhachasebak League Convener, Jubayer Hasan Jony, 26, sustained bullet wounds to his right leg and Jubo League activist Sujon, 28, was injuries on his left arm by sharp weapons .

Locals said suspended ward president Abdus Sattar of the Awami League bought a dredger in 2010 with money from a number of people to start a sand extraction joint venture. However when the sand mining suddenly came to a halt, the investors wanted their money back.

Injured Jubayer said: “When Sujon and I went to check on the dredger machine, Sattar’s men, Tony and Dony, opened fire and attacked us with sharp weapons.”

Hafizur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Rajpara police station said he heard about the clash and the injured were taken to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.

Police are investigating the incident, the OC added.
