The man had served 14 years in jail in a 2002 murder case
A convict, who was released several years ago, after serving 14 years in prison for the murder of a schoolgirl in Gaibandha, has been arrested again for allegedly raping another schoolgirl.
Police arrested the man, Mehedi Hasan Modern, in Keraniganj, Dhaka on Friday night. He was brought to Gaibandha on Saturday, said Sadar police station OC Md Shahriar.
He said Modern was produced before a Gaibandha court on Sunday afternoon, which later sent him to jail.
OC Shahriar said, Modern and his cohort Sabbir Hossain Bappi whisked away a sixth grade girl on a motorcycle from Kalpalata School area in Gaibandha town last Wednesday, and took her inside a shop at Badiakhali, where they took turns in raping her.
Locals rescued the girl after hearing her cries for help.
The OC said the victim’s mother filed a case at Sadar police station against Modern and Sabbir, accusing them of kidnapping, and raping her daughter.
The district’s Additional SP Moinul Hoque said police are conducting raids to arrest Sabbir.
He added: “The rape survivor’s medical tests have been completed. We have also sent her clothes to Dhaka for DNA testing.”
On July 17, 2002, Sadia Sultana Trisha, a fourth grader at Gaibandha’s Madhyapara Government Primary School, died jumping into a pond after she was chased by Modern, and two others on her way home from school.
Modern and his two cohorts Md Shahin, and Ariful Islam were later sentenced to death by a Gaibandha court in the murder case, which incident shook the country at the time.
After the convicts challenged that verdict, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court sentenced them to 14 years of rigorous Imprisonment by commuting the death sentence.
