Bus owners suspend strike in Khulna

The plying of buses resumed Saturday morning.

Update : 06 Oct 2019, 12:45 AM

Bus owners have temporarily withdrawn the strike, which they initiated on four routes in Khulna, protesting the beating of a bus owner.

The plying of buses resumed Saturday morning.

The decision was announced by the Rupsa-Bagerhat Bus Minibus Owners’ Association after the Khulna Motor Workers' Union offered to hold a discussion regarding the aforementioned matter.

Kamruzzaman, a member of the Rupsa-Bagerhat Bus Minibus Owner's Association, said: "27 buses of the Ruposi Bangla Transport, and an additional 27 buses ply on these routes under the guideline of this association. But for the last few months, at least 20 buses from Khulna have been illegally plying on these routes.

“In protest, the association stopped a Ma Paribahan bus from picking up passengers at Sonadanga bus stand on Friday morning.  Angered, local commuters assaulted the owner of a bus at Ghonapara of Gopalganj.”

Receiving the news, the association halted all movement of buses along these routes, causing distress to the passengers, he added.

Akhi Member, the former senior vice president of Rupsa-Bagerhat Bus Minibus Owners' Association, said: "A meeting will be held between the Khulna Motor Workers' Union, and Rupsa-Bagerhat Bus Minibus Owners' Association on October 9. The strike will once again resume from October 10 if no solution regarding the assault of the bus owner is met."
