A Bagerhat court sent 15 Indian fishermen to jail on charges of illegal fishing in Bangladesh maritime territory.
According to the police, they were arrested by a Bangladesh Navy patrol team upon intruding into Bangladesh territory on Monday.
The detained are Babul Sarker, 42, Kartik Dash, 45, Sonaram Dash, 51, Rajesh Dash, 33, Bholanath Dash, 60, Basudev Dash, 30, Pilton Dash, 23, Uttam Dash, 35, Mintu Dash, 25, Bimol Dash, 48, Kiron Dash, 64, Surjo Dash, 25, Nepal Dash, 29, Uttam Dash, 26 and Ananda Dash, 50.
They are all from various villages under Kakdwip police station in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district.
Arrested, the Bagerhat Judicial Magistrate Court sent them to the district jail on Wednesday.
Iqbal Bahar Chowdhury, officer-in-charge (OC) of Mongla police station said that on a routine patrol, the BNS Nishan seized fishing trawler Ma Laxmi from the Fair Buoy area in the Bay of Bengal on Monday evening.
The 15 Indian fishermen were caught fishing 90 nautical miles from the Mongla Port, within Bangladesh territorial waters.
Abul Manzur, Petty Officer of Bangladesh Navy, filed a case against the Indian fishermen.
The detained fishermen were transferred to the Mongla police station on Tuesday evening, the OC added.
