Members of Bangladesh Navy detained the fishermen from the Bay of Bengal on Thursday evening

A court in Bagerhat has sent 23 Indian fishermen to jail on charges of fishing having intruded into maritime boundary of Bangladesh.

Md Iqbal Bahar Chowdhury, officer-in-charge (OC) of Mongla police station in Bagerhat, confirmed the matter on Friday.

He said: "Members of the Bangladesh Navy detained the fishermen on Thursday evening and handed them over to the Mongla police station around 2:30pm on Friday."

Later, the Navy filed a case against them under the Marine Fisheries Ordinance, 1983, the OC said.

Earlier, Navy personnel detained the 23 fishermen and seized two fishing trawlers -- FB Swarnadweep and FB Amrite -- on Thursday evening while they were fishing in the Bay of Bengal in Bangladesh's border.

All the residents hailed from 24 Parganas and Bijay Nagar in India's West Bengal state.

On October 1, some 15 other Indian fishermen were also sent to jail on the same charge after Navy personnel detained them for their intrusion in the bay, the police official added.
