A man has been accused of killing his wife and then burning her body in Saghata of Gaibandha district.

Police recovered the burnt body of Selina Begum, 45, wife of Moynal Hossain, from Chitulia village under Bharatkhali union of Saghata upazila, on Wednesday afternoon.

Sub-Inspector (SI) of Saghata police station Azizur Rahman confirmed the matter on Thursday.

He said: "The neighbours heard the couple fighting on Wednesday morning. Later in the afternoon, they found Selina's burnt body in their room, and informed the police.

"There was no one else in the house, they said," he added.

Police recovered her body and sent it to Gaibandha Sadar Adhunik Hospital for autopsy, the SI said.

Although neighbours have professed their suspicions that Moynal suffocated Selina and then burned her body, police are yet to determine whether it was a murder or a suicide.

"We will know once the autopsy has been completed," he said.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Saghata police station Belal Hossain said Selina's father lodged a case with his police station on Wednesday night.

Police are investigating to find Moynal, the OC added.
