Two probe bodies asked to submit reports within 24 hours
The train driver and his assistant have been suspended following the accident in Rangpur that killed one person and injured 30 others.
Locomaster Shamsuzzoha, and his assistant Shahin Reza were suspended for negligence, Shafiqur Rahman, Lalmonirhat railway divisional manager, confirmed to Dhaka Tribune on Thursday.
“At the same time, two probe bodies have been formed to investigate the accident and asked to submit their reports within 24 hours,” he added.
Earlier, one person was killed while 30 others injured when Panchagarh-bound Uttarbanga Mail train’s engine accidentally hit one of its coaches at the Kaunia Junction.
Shafiqur Rahman said: "The engine of the train accidentally hit its one of the coaches while the driver was turning the engine at the Kaunia Junction."
The deceased is Apel Mahmood, a student of Gaibandha Nursing College.
Fire service and witnesses said the driver was changing the engine around 3:45pm when the Panchagarh-bound Uttarbanga Mail train left from Santahar reached Kaunia Station.
Rangpur Fire Service and Civil Defense Deputy Director Shamsuzzoha confirmed the casualty from the accident.
Railway sources said due to the extra speed during the engine change, the middle section of coach 1 and 2 of the train got twisted, leaving Apel Mahmood dead on spot.
On receiving the news, Rangpur and Kaunia Fire Service personnel arrived at the spot and took the injured to Kaunia Upazila Health Complex and Rangpur Medical College and Hospital.
"Nine people are undergoing treatment now at the hospital," said on-duty physician Rafi Billah.
