The Department of Environment (DoE) has fined a realtor with Tk6.24 lakh for leveling hills in Chittagong city.

Azadur Rahman Mollick, DoE director of Chittagong city, slapped the fines on the errant realtor, Nasirabad Properties Ltd, during a hearing held at the DoE head office on Tuesday.

Earlier on Monday, Sangjukta Das Gupta, assistant director of DoE, visited the spot at Zakir Hossain Road under the Khulshi police station in the city and found evidence of hill cutting.

As per the Environment Conservation (Amendment) Act 2010, hill cutting is a cognizable offence, and no government, semi-government, or autonomous organization is allowed to cut or raze hills without prior permission from the authorities concerned.

Under the terms of Building Construction Rules 1996, a clearance certificate must be obtained from the Department of Environment before cutting any hill.

Indiscriminate hill cutting has triggered calamities like landslides that killed at least 230 people in Chittagong in the last decade.
