80 BNP leaders held in Rajshahi division

Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir calls for unity among countrymen to free Khaleda Zia

Eighty BNP leaders were nabbed by the law enforcers, and intercity bus to Rajshahi was halted yesterday, due to a divisional assembly called by BNP, alleged BNP office secretary of Rajshahi Nazmul Haque Dickens.

While talking to Bangla Tribune, he said: “BNP leaders were arrested so that the party’s rally demanding the release of Khaleda Zia cannot be successful. Public transport has also been halted so that leaders from different parts of the country cannot be a part of this rally. Even leaders who came into Rajshahi to join the rally using different modes of transport like auto-rickshaw, and rickshaw were harassed by the police. 

Senior Assistant SP of Rajshahi, Iftekhar Alam, refuting the allegation told Bangla Tribune that they have arrested 132 people, and all of them had criminal records.

No one was arrested because of any political activities.  

Kamal Hossain Robi, president of Rajshahi Transport Labourers Union, insisted that the services were halted as the number of passengers was low due to rain. He said buses were running on the Rajshahi-Dhaka route, and there is no connection with the BNP rally for the halt of the buses. 

BNP’s Rajshahi City unit President Mosaddek Hossain Bulbul told the media that the whole thing was done so that the rally cannot be successful. Citing the fact that BNP had already taken permission for the rally beforehand. 

Buses services halted on Bogra- Rajshahi and Natore- Rajshahi  

Bus services on the Bogra-Rajshahi route remained suspended yesterday, causing immense suffering to thousands of commuters.

BNP leaders alleged that bus services have been stopped so that BNP leaders cannot join the rally called for freeing Khaleda Zia. Though, many of the leaders came to Rajshahi using an auto-rickshaw, microbus, and rickshaw. They also alleged that without any prior notice the bus service has been halted. 

BNP’s Bogra district joint convener, advocate AKM Saiful Islam, said that the government has planned the whole thing, and they are scared of BNP’s popularity.

BNP leaders told the media that some leaders have come to Rajshahi on Saturday to join the rally, but the leaders who could not come on Saturday, and was to start on Sunday were harassed by the police. Many of the buses were stopped, and were not allowed to enter Rajshahi.   

Bus services were also halted on Natore- Rajshahi route so that BNP leaders could not reach the rally for freeing Khaleda Zia, alleged BNP leaders.

BNP leaders also alleged that they were harassed while trying to reach Rajshahi using the Natore route.
