Bangladesh Army Chief of Staff Gen Aziz Ahmed has welcomed the government’s decision to launch a crackdown on illegal casinos around the country.

“This initiative will surely curb the crime rate,” he told reporters after inaugurating the country’s first modern “Milking Parlour” at the Military Farm inside the  Savar Cantonment on Tuesday morning.

Sharing his thoughts on the issue, Gen Aziz said the casino raids were only proving how strict Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s position was against the reign of corruption and crime.

He also said their own intelligence agency was also ordered to look into notices sent to the army officers’ clubs, including the one of the retired officers.

“We will do everything necessary to address this issue,” he added.

In a major clampdown on illegal gambling activities, law enforcement agencies raided different sporting clubs across the country over the past week and busted a number of illegal casinos.

Most of them were run by a number of leaders of different ruling party affiliate organizations.

Apart from making several arrests, the security forces also seized huge amounts of money and gambling equipment from these casinos.
