Dr Mahbubur Rahman, proctor of Islamic University (IU) in Kushtia, has quit on Sunday night amid protests by a faction of Bangladesh Chhatra League activists.

Vice-Chancellor Professor M Harun-Ur-Rashid Askari temporarily appointed Professor Dr Paresh Chandra Barman as the acting proctor at an emergency meeting of IU authorities, around 10:30pm on Sunday, with VC Askari in the chair.

The VC said: "Professor Paresh has been serving as the student counselor. He will continue to work as the acting proctor until further notice.

“We will appoint a permanent proctor in future,” the VC said.

Over a hundred Chhatra League activists staged protests on the campus, demanding Professor Rahman's resignation. The protesters called off the demonstration after he resigned from his post.

They had raised many complaints against him, including the shooting during Chhatra League protests in 2014.
