Sonagazi Model police station OC Moin Uddin Ahmed claims that ASI Sujon was recalled due to his negligent handling of the widow's case over a land dispute

A policeman was withdrawn from duty after allegations tying him to the rape of a widow emerged in Sonagazi upazila of Feni.

Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Sujon Chandra Das was closed to the district police lines yesterday.

Feni Assistant Superintendent of Police Saiful Ahmed Bhuiyan confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune.

He said the matter was being investigated by Hassan Mahmud, the superintendent of Chittagong Range DIG Office's crime division, said

Sonagazi Model police station OC Moin Uddin Ahmed claims that ASI Sujon was recalled due to his negligent handling of the widow's case over a land dispute.

The decision to recall ASI Sujon was taken soon after the woman's court testimony in the rape case on Thursday, where she told the court that Sujon was among the men who raped her but that she did not accuse him in the case for fear of a backlash from the police, he added.

According to her relatives, on September 15, the widow went to Sonagazi Model police station to file a case over a land dispute in Uttar Sonapur village under the Amirabad Union. The investigative duties in the matter fell on ASI Sujon.

Afterwards, she fell prey to a fraudster named Rahima, who lured her to her home, where five men including a local Sanju Shikdar, Jubo League’s upazila committee member Kawsar Hossain, and Afsal Hossain gang-raped her.

On September 17, with the intervention of senior officers at the station, the woman filed a case accusing the three, and three other unknown individuals.

Soon after, police arrested Sanju Shikdar and Rahima, and sent them to court following a court order.

The other suspect, Jubo League member Kawsar Hossain, was arrested yesterday.
