A suspected robber has been killed in  a reported gunfight with police in sadar upazila of Lakshmipur.

The incident took place in the fisheries area of Shakchar village under sadar upazila on early Saturday.

The deceased  Arif Hossain, who hailed from the same village, was a  CNG-run auto rickshaw driver. His family claimed he has been missing for a few days before the incident took place.

Sadar police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) AKM Azizur Rahman Miah told Dhaka Tribune: "Upon receiving information that a gang of armed robbers would meet in the area, a police patrol team conducted a raid there."

Realizing that police were present, the robbers opened fire at them, forcing the police to fire back in self-defense and triggering a gunfight, he added.

Later, Arif's bullet-riddled body was found from the spot. He was then taken to Lakshmipur Sadar Hospital, where the on- duty doctors declared him dead. The body has been kept at the hospital.

The OC said two police officials - Sub-Inspector (SI) Motahar Hossain and Constable Sohel Rana- were also injured in the incident. They were also provided treatment in the sadar hospital.

Police also recovered a firearm, three bullets and two sharp weapons from the spot, the OC added.
