5 including policeman killed in Gopalganj road accident

Thirteen others were also injured

At least five people including a police member have been killed, and 13 others injured, as a bus crashed into a truck in Gopalganj Sadar upazila.

The accident took place on Dhaka-Khulna Highway in Shonashur area around 2am on Saturday.

The deceased are -- Subedar Abdur Rashid, 45, who was serving in Gopalganj police lines, and Bijan Hawlader, 23, Russel, 22, and Kamal Mandal, 24, residents of Nazirpur upazila in Pirojpur, and Habib Munshi, 35, a resident of Tungipara upazila in Gopalganj. 

Bhanga highway police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Ataur Rahman said a truck laden with iron rods was parked beside the highway as one of its wheels had gotten punctured.

The accident took place when a Pirojpur-bound bus of Emad Paribahan from Dhaka hit the truck from behind, leaving three passengers dead on the spot and 15 others injured, he said.

The injured were taken to Gopalganj General Hospital.

Of them, Subedar Rashid and Habib were shifted to Khulna Medical College and Hospital (KMCH) as their condition deteriorated.

The police member was declared dead by the on-duty doctor at KMCH, the OC said. 

Habib died at the hospital while undergoing treatment around 10am, he added.
