2 Rohingyas among 3 killed in Teknaf 'gunfight'

Police recovered guns, bullets and bullet shells from the area

Three suspected criminals, two of them Rohingyas, have been killed in a reported gunfight with police in Teknaf upazila of Cox’s Bazar district.

The incident occurred at Shamlapur's Paharidhala area in Baharchhara union around 4am on Thursday.

The deceased are Mohammad Jamil, 20, son of Fazal Ahmed, Asmat Ullah, 21, son of Nabi Hossain, both from Ukhiya’s Balukhali camp and Mohammad Rafique, 24, son of Mohammad Ali from Teknaf upazila.

Pradip Kumar Das, officer-in-charge (OC) of Teknaf Model police station, said: “We arrested some criminals on Wednesday. They were wanted in several cases.

"Based on their information, we conducted a drive in the area to recover firearms.”

“As soon as we reached the area, other criminals open fired at us. In retaliation, we fired back that left the trio injured,” he added.

Later, the injured were taken to Teknaf Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared them dead.

Sub-Inspector (SI) Habibullah, constables Bakibul and Delowar were also injured during the gunfight.

Three firearms, six bullets and eight bullet shells were recovered from the spot.
