Police in Chittagong have detained 18 suspected Rohingyas and two brokers with Bangladeshi passports and national identity (NID) cards.
Detective Branch (DB) team took them into custody from in front of the Assistant High Commission of India situated in Khulshi around 7pm, said Chittagong Metropolitan Police DB’s Assistant Commissioner Mizanur Rahman.
He said the 20 people were first detained because of their suspicious movement near the commission on Habib Lane, a branch street of Zakir Hossain Road. The commission also houses a Visa Application Center.
Later, the NIDs and passports were found on them.
The detainees were later taken to the DB office in the port city’s Laldighi area, said Mizanur. “They are being questioned and we are working to verify their identities.”

During primary interrogation, the trio confessed that they obtained passports from the Regional Passport Office in Noakhali through a broker, using fake NID cards and other documents.
On the same day, officials of Chittagong Divisional Passport and Visa Office had detained another Rohingya youth while he was trying to collect a Bangladeshi passport using a fake identity.
