Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council (BHBCUC) has threatened to boycott Rangpur 3 by-polls if the Election Commission (EC) fails to reschedule the polls from October 5, which coincides with the Durga Puja festival.
The unity council also submitted a memorandum to the Chief Election Commissioner on Monday, asking the voting day to be rescheduled after October 8.
“We asked them to fix any day after October 8 for the voting. If not done, we have nothing to do but boycott the election,” BHBCUC general secretary Rana Dasgupta told Dhaka Tribune.
This year, the second day of the Durga Puja, also known as Moha Soptomi, will be celebrated on October 5.
Rangpur 3 constituency fell vacant on July 14 following the death of the Leader of the Opposition and Jatiya Party Chairman Hussain Muhammad Ershad.
On September 1, the Election Commission announced the schedule for the Rangpur bye-polls where voting is to be held on October 5.
“We requested them to defer it considering people’s religious sentiment, and to maintain the law and order situation,” Rana added.
The unity council members met the Election Commission secretary, and submitted a memorandum to him.
“He (secretary) told us that he will be considering the issue with importance. But, as the commission (Election Commission) is the authority, I am sending it to them just today,” he said.
Earlier, as per Puja Observing Parishad application, EC secretary Md Alamgir told that the by-polls would not be deferred.
