2 others injured
At least three people were killed and 2 others injured in road accidents in Bagerhat, Pirojpur, and Patuakhali, on Monday.
In Bagerhat, a teenage motorcyclist was killed and a truck driver's assistant injured, when the truck hit the motorbike and pushed it into a roadside ditch in Shyambagat of Fakirhat upazila in the afternoon.
The deceased was identified as Shohan, 17, of Shubhadia village in the same upazila.
Bagerhat fire service Deputy Assistant Director Masud Sardar confirmed the incident.
In Pirojpur, a minor schoolboy was killed when an auto-rickshaw hit him at a local college intersection in Bhandaria upazila town in the morning.
The schoolboy killed in the accident was Rishad, 7, said Bhandaria police station Sub-Inspector(SI) Md Mostofa Hossain.
In a separate incident in Chandipur Chaumuhoni of Indurkani upazila, an unidentified bus passenger was severely injured when the vehicle's tire abruptly burst and rammed into a roadside home in the afternoon.
The house was unoccupied and the injured is receiving treatment at a local hospital, said Indurkani police station OC Md Habibur Rahman.
In Patuakhali, a woman was killed when she lost her balance and fell off a motorcycle in Kazirhat of Galachipa upazila in the afternoon.
The deceased was identified as Rabeya Begum, 35.
Galachipa police station OC Akhter Morshed said: "The woman died receiving treatment at a hospital. She was a passenger on a rented motorbike."
According to previous media reports, road safety experts have been saying for a long time that sidesaddle riding on a motorbike is not a safe sitting position for anyone.
