A suspected drug dealer was killed in a gunfight with the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in Sonargaon upazila of Narayanganj.

Two RAB members were injured and three suspects were arrested in the incident that took place in Chongakandi of the upazila early Wednesday.

The deceased identified as Hridoy alias Gittu Hridoy, 30, had over 17 cases filed against him and was listed with Sonargaon police station as a top drug dealer. Police had also announced a bounty of Tk10,000 for his capture.

RAB 11 Company Commander, Major Talukdar Nazmus Sakib, confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune.

He said: “Acting on a tip-off about a consignment of illegal drugs crossing through Chongakandi in Sonargaon upazila, RAB set up a checkpost in the area. In the early hours of Wednesday, when we signalled a car to stop, it ignored instructions and tried to escape.

“When RAB tried to stop the vehicle, people shot at us from inside the car. RAB also returned fire in self defence and Hridoy was caught in the line of fire.”

The elite force arrested the driver not identified yet, Jahirul Islam Dollar, and Selim. RAB also seized a car, a pistol, two bullets, a pistol magazine, 500 yaba pills, and five sharp weapons.
