Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested three suspects in Gazipur over the murder of Kamrul Islam, an official of RFL. Kamrul was killed while being mugged.
During a press briefing on Monday morning, RAB 1 Commanding Officer Lt Colonel Md Sarwar Bin Kashem said the suspects were arrested from Ershad Nagar in Tongi area of the district around 2:30am.
The arrestees are- prime accused Abdul Haque Rani alias Babu, 19, his accomplices Md Sujon alias Shahjalal, 21, and Awwal Hawlader, 26.
Lt Colonel Sarwar said the arrestees were active members of a gang of muggers. Babu and Awwal are bus and auto-rickshaw drivers respectively while Sujon is a bus conductor.
Besides having their own professions, they also mugged people to earn extra money.
They would target the passengers in their bus or auto rickshaws, and inform their accomplices. Later, they would rob those people, the commanding officer added.
Deceased Kamrul Islam was a general manager at a company of RFL group in Sylhet. He came to College Gate area to attend an official meeting on September 7, he said.
When he reached the College Gate area around 4am, he was cornered by the muggers. Although he handed over all his belongings to them, Babu still stabbed Kamrul, which lead to his death.
Strict legal action will be taken against the culprits, he added.
The RAB official said they also recovered a switchgear knife, and impounded an auto rickshaw and a mobile phone from their possession.
