RCC launches tree planting program

Mayor AHM Khairuzzaman Liton, who opened the program with splanting a tree sapling on the Padma river embankment, urged city dwellers to extend their wholehearted support to make the program a total success

Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) in the district yesterday formally launched a program of planting 14,500 tree saplings in the current season aiming to safeguard the city’s environment and biodiversity.

Mayor AHM Khairuzzaman Liton, who opened the program with splanting a tree sapling on the Padma river embankment, urged city dwellers to extend their wholehearted support to make the program a total success.

Discussing and devising ways and means to attain their goal, he said massive tree planting can help reduce carbon emissions substantially, and that is very important to protect the ecological balance in the arid region.

He said all quarters should take responsibility in protecting the city and its surroundings from the adverse impact of climate change and massive planting can be a vital means of attaining the cherished goal.

Liton urged participants of the launching program to plant tree saplings, including fruit trees, in all vacant places and other catchment areas of all institutions to create a green environment everywhere in the city.

Chaired by Panel Mayor Shariful Islam Babu, the meeting was addressed among others, by Panel Mayor Tahera Khatun, Ward Councilors Rejaunnabi Dudu, Md Kamruzzaman and Matiur Rahman, Chief Engineer Ashraful Haque, and Executive Engineer Nur Islam.
