Suspected pirate killed in Cox's Bazar 'gunfight'
A suspected pirate was killed in a reported gunfight with Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in Cox's Bazar's Moheshkhali upazila. The deceased, Nurul Quader Rana, 34, was from Shapmara in Dhalghata union of Moheshkhali upazila.
RAB-7 Media Officer and Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP-Media), Md Mashkur Rahman, confirmed the matter.
"On a tip-off, a RAB 7 team raided a suspected pirate hideout in Moheshkhali's Matarbari Sairar Dale area around 5 am yesterday," ASP Mashkur said. “Realizing our presence, the suspected pirates opened fire, causing us to retaliate,” he added.
"Nurul was shot and injured in the gunfight," the ASP said. Nurul was admitted to Moheshkhali Health Complex in critical condition, where the duty doctors pronounced him dead.
His body was taken to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital for autopsy, according to the ASP.
RAB recovered seven firearms, and 63 bullets from the scene, filing a case about the matter. ASP Mashkur said Nurul was the prime suspect of the dacoity of the trawlers MV Ma-Babar Doa and MV Mahin on the coast of Noakhali's Hatia upazila on August 26.
He was also a suspect in several cases in Chittagong and Cox's Bazar, the ASP added.
Auto rickshaw theft gang member killed in gunfight
In another case, an alleged member of an auto rickshaw theft gang was killed in a reported gunfight with detectives in Badekolpa of the district town, yesterday.
The deceased was identified as Khalil, 37, son of Abdul Jalil of Bakchala village in Fulbaria upazila.
Shah Kamal Akanda, officer-in-charge of the Detective Branch (DB) of police, said that on a tip off that a gang of auto rickshaw thieves were selling stolen vehicles in the area, the DB team conducted a raid in the early hours of yesterday.
Realizing the presence of law enforcement, the gang members opened fire on the police, prompting them to fire back in self defence that triggered a gunfight, the OC added.
Khalil sustained bullet injuries and the police took him to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital where duty doctors declared him dead.
Police recovered two auto rickshaws and a locally made pipe gun from the spot, the OC said.
He said Khalil was wanted in eight cases.
Drug dealer killed in Sylhet
In another part of the country, a drug dealer was killed by Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in Sylhet yesterday.
The deceased was identified as Fazar Ali, son of late Abdul Gafur Badai of Gokhal Par village in Companiganj upazila. The gunfight took place in Mitrimahal village of Gowainghat upazila in the district.
According to RAB sources, law enforcement raided a drug den taking Fazar Ali along with them. Sensing the presence of RAB, gang members opened fire, prompting them to fire back in self defence that triggered a gunfight. During the shootout, Fazar Ali was shot when he tried to escape.
Ali was taken with bullet injuries to MAG Osmani Medical College where duty doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Ali had 21 cases filed against him including Child Repression and drug charges.
Talking to Dhaka Tribune, Ali’s older brother, Romon Ali, said Fazar was taken by RAB who came riding 12 motorcycles. The very next day he got news of his brother’s death. Talking to our correspondent, Fazar said his brother was earlier involved in drug peddling, but was clean when RAB took him on Sunday.
