Three children found dead in Matlab South upazila under unclear circumstances on Friday, most likely died from suffocation, said the police.

The three, including two Bhangarpar Madrasa students, were found unconscious in a small room adjacent to Purba Kaladi Jame mosque after Jummah prayers. Two of them died before they could be taken to hospital. Another boy died minutes after he was hospitalized.

Chandpur Superintendent of Police, Jihadul Kabir, said at a press briefing on Saturday: "We suspect the chemicals of the IPS batteries in the room,  reacted somehow and produced poisonous fumes. With the excessive production of hydrogen sulphide or carbon dioxide, an oxygen deficiency can occur inside an enclosed space, and suffocation can lead to the collapse of brain functions. This was the initial theory provided by the forensics and CID teams."

“The room was locked from the inside so foul play has been ruled out. If they drank any toxic substances it would have been apparent. The investigation teams have collected their samples and once the autopsy report is submitted, we can determine their exact cause of death,” he added.

Matlab South police station OC Swapan Kumar Aich said: "The room from which the bodies were recovered had three batteries which were used for Solar and IPS power generation."

The deceased were identified as imam Jamal Uddin’s son Abdullah Al Noman, 8, third-grader Ibrahim, 12, and fourth-grader Rifat Hossain, 15.
