An accused in eight robbery cases has been killed in a reported gunfight with police in Beanibazar of Sylhet. 

The deceased Misbah Uddin, 27, son of Alim Uddin was a resident of neighbouring Jokiganj upazila. 

Sylhet Additional Police Superintendent (Media) Mohammad Aminul said that Misbah was a member of an inter-district robber gang, and an accused in six robbery cases.

After arresting Misbah from Sheola area, a police team conducted a drive in Sheola bridge area of Beanibazar to recover arms and ammunition, he said. 

On the way, the associates of Misbah opened fire on police, and tried to snatch him away, said the police official, adding: "In self defence police returned fire, triggering a gunfight."

At one stage, accused Misbah tried to escape the scene but was gunned down. 

Later, Misbah was taken to Beanibazar Health Complex, where the on-duty medical officer declared him dead. 

Meanwhile, police recovered a home-made pipe gun, five rounds of bullets, six magazines, two machetes, and a long sharp sword.

A case was filed with Beanibazar Police station.
