In a gruesome example of the outcome of narcotics abuse, an addict has burned his sexagenarian mother alive in Bogra.

The horrific incident took place at Gojaria village under Chikashi union of the district’s Dhunat upazila around 5pm on Sunday, confirmed police.

Dhunat police station Officer-in-Charge Ismail Hossain Bengal also identified the deceased woman as Khuki Begum, 65.

The son, identified as Sohanur Rahman Khokon, 32, was later caught and beaten by locals before being handed over to Dhunat police.

Quoting neighbours, Ismail said Sohanur is unemployed and has been a drug addict for a long time. He used to torture his parents often for money. His parents even sold a piece of land recently to give him money.

“On Sunday, Sohanur demanded Tk5,000 from his mother. Angered after not receiving any, he tied her up, covered her body with a blanket on the floor, poured petrol on her and lit the fire," OC Ismail added.

He also started playing songs at a high volume so that no one outside could hear his mother’s screams for help, the OC furthered.

“Neighbours rescued her and were taking her to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital. But she died on the way around 6:30pm.”

The police official added that Sohanur’s wife also left him recently.
