Suspected top criminal killed in Narsingdi 'gunfight'

A suspected top criminal has been killed in a reported gunfight with Detective Branch (DB) of police in Narsingdi.

The incident occurred in Tatapara of Madhabdi municipality area in sadar upazila early Saturday.

The deceased is Awlad Hossain Mithun, 35, who was listed as a drugs and arms trader by the police.

DB police also arrested four of his accomplices- Sohel, Hridoy, 22, Mainul, 24, and Mehedi Hasan, 25, who had arms and ammunition in their possession.

Two policemen were also injured in the incident, Abdul Gaffar, sub-inspector (SI) of Narsingdi district DB police confirmed to Dhaka Tribune

He said Mithun and his accomplice Sohel were arrested from Narayanganj on Friday.

Based on information provided by them during interrogation, DB police conducted a drive in Madhabdi municipality area to retrieve illegal arms.

Mithun's accomplices, who were waiting in the area, opened fire on the DB team when they reached the location, forcing the team to fire back in self-defence and triggering a gunfight, the SI added.

Mithun sustained bullet injuries during the encounter. He was then taken to the Narsingdi Sadar Hospital where doctors declared him dead.

DB police then arrested Mithun's three accomplices- Hridoy, Mainul and Mehedi, and recovered two foreign guns, a pipe gun, eight bullets from the spot.

The SI further said Mithun was wanted in various cases including those of murder, possession of arms, drugs and explosives.
