Naryanganj district Detective Branch of (DB) police arrested a police constable on Monday night in a case filed for raping a woman in the Chashara area of Sadar upazila on August 7.
DB police sources said the accused, Sabbir Ahmed Mehdi, 27, worked for the River Police unit in Dhaka, and was a tenant in Mizanur's Rahman's house near Padmakuri school of Siddhirganj upazila in Narayanganj.
According to the case filed by the woman, she met Sabbir one day when she went to drop her son off to school in Dhaka. Later they talked on the phone for sometime. On August 7, Sabbir and the woman met at Chashara and he took her to a relative's house. Once they reached their destination, he handed her a bottle of coke and she became unconscious when she drank it.
She blacked out and Sabbir raped her, recording footage of her naked.
Sabbir then went on to blackmail the woman, demanding Tk3 lakh. The woman and her family paid Tk 230,000 but he kept asking for more, prompting her to file a case against him on Monday. Sabbir was arrested on the same night from the Sanapar area, under Siddhirganj police station.
Narayanganj DB police Inspector Enamul Haque said: "We are interrogating Sabbir Ahmed Mehdi. The case filed against him is under investigation."
