Khagrachhari gunfight: Case filed over death of 3 UPDF members

The plaintiff, Pijush Kanti Dey, sub-inspector of Dighinala police station, filed a murder case and an arms case with the police station on Tuesday, accusing 7-8 unknown individuals.

A case was filed for the death of three United People's Democratic Front (UPDF-Prasit Khisa) members, in a gunfight with the Army in Dighinala upazila of Khagrachhari.

The plaintiff, Pijush Kanti Dey, sub-inspector of Dighinala police station, filed a murder case and an arms case with the police station on Tuesday, accusing 7-8 unknown individuals.

Khagrachhari Superintendent of Police Md Ahmar Uzzaman confirmed and said: "The current law and order situation of the entire district is under control and security measures have also been strengthened." 

The bodies of the victims were handed over to family members and local representatives, after their post-mortem at Khagrachhari Sadar Hospital on Tuesday afternoon. 

UPDF Khagrachhari district unit coordinator Angya Marma confirmed in a press release that the victims were their party men. He condemned the incident and claimed it was the result of a conspiracy.  

According to an Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) press release issued on Monday, an army patrol team acting on a tip-off, conducted a raid at a den of UPDF members in the Boradom area.

When the patrol team reached the spot, UPDF members opened fire on the army men, who returned fire in retaliation, resulting in a 10-15 minute gunfight.

At one stage, the UPDF men retreated, leaving behind three of their men who were found dead. They were Bujendra Lal Chakma,45, Nabeen Jyoti Chakma,32, and Rashil Chakma,25.

The army team recovered two pistols with eight rounds of bullets, and an American M4 automatic carbine with four rounds of bullets.
