Three members of United People's Democratic Front (UPDF-Prasit Khisa) were killed in a shootout with members of Army at Baradom area under Dighinala upazila of Khagrachhari yesterday.

An Inter Service Public Relation (ISPR) press release issued on Monday said that the shootout took place with a petrol team of army in the Boradom area.

Acting of a tip off about UPDF’s armed men, a petrol team from the Dighinala army zone reached the area and UPDF men opened fire on them sensing their presence. There was a 10-15 minutes’ gunfight among them as the army retaliated.

The UPDF men retreated at a stage of the fight leaving three of their men who were found dead. “Later the army petrol team conducted a search and found two pistols with eight rounds of bullets, an American M4 automatic carbine with four rounds of bullets,” the release said adding that some UPDF men might have been injured in the shootout.

Later, cops from the Dighinala Police Station recovered the three bodies.

UPDF Khagrachari district unit coordinator Angya Marma confirmed that the dead victims were their party men. They are Bujendra Lal Chakma,45, Nabeen Jyoti Chakma,32, and Rashil Chakma,25.

He claimed that their party men were picked up by the army and killed. They were detained from Kripapur around 4am from a house.

“At the first hand we heard that they were picked up but had no concrete information but after 1pm when the dead bodies were found everything was clear,” he said.

He claimed that when their men were picked up they had issued a statement demanding their release.

“If they were accused in any case they should have been brought to justice. They should not have been killed,” he added.

He claimed that the three men were not involved in any criminal activities. “They were active members of democratic movement here.”

Nabeen went there from Panchhari for organizational work while Bhujendra and Rashil are locals. “They were picked up from Kripapur and killed in the Binandachokh area, some six-seven kilometers off the locality.”

The latest incident of the shootout came just within a couple of days of the death of another UPDF member Sumon Chakma in a shootout with the army at Dopata of Baghaihat in Rangamati last Friday.

Police said he was a suspect in the murder of the Naniarchar upazila chairman Shaktiman Chakma. Shaktiman Chakma, a top leader of the Parbatya Chattagram Jana Sanghati Samity, PCJSS (MN Larma), was shot dead on in May last year.

UPDF leader Angya Marma said that Sumon was their former activist. He stayed at home and was not involved with UPDF’s activities anymore.

His death was followed by the death of an army soldier Nasim who was killed by miscreants when a patrol team of the army came under attack at Poaithupara under the Rajsthali upazila in Rangamati on August 18.

After eight days into the incident police filed a case with Rajsthali Police Station yesterday against some unidentified people.

Office-in-Charge of Rajsthali Police Station Mofjol Ahmed Khan said they were yet to identify the killers.
