A suspected robber has been killed in a “gunfight” with police in Zakiganj upazila.

The incident occurred early Saturday, in the Maricha border area of Kajalshah union.

The deceased was identified as Abdus Shaheed, alias Fulu of Dharmadihi village under Baralekha upazila in Moulvibazar district.

Sylhet division Additional Superintendent (ASP) of Police and Media Officer Md Aminul Islam said: "A team of police conducted a drive in the area after acting on a tip off that a gang of robbers had gathered in Fulu’s house and were together preparing to commit a robbery elsewhere.

"Realizing presence of the police, the robbers opened fire on them, forcing them to fire back in self-defence, triggering the “gunfight”.

Police sent Fulu to a local upazila health complex, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.

His body has been sent to MAG Osmani Medical College morgue for autopsy.

There are six robbery and arms cases against Fulu under different police stations in Sylhet.
