Road accidents kill 19 in 9 districts

The accidents took place in Faridpur, Dhaka, Narayanganj, Bogra, Thakurgaon, Pabna, Dinajpur, Kurigram, and Gazipur district

A total of 19 people have been killed in separate road accidents across the country on Saturday.

The accidents took place in Faridpur, Dhaka, Narayanganj, Bogra, Thakurgaon, Pabna, Dinajpur, Kurigram, and Gazipur district.

At least 11 people were killed in two separate accidents in Sadar and Nagarkanda upazilas of Faridpur.

In Sadar upazila, at least eight people were killed and 20 others injured when a Gopalganj-bound bus plunged into a river, from a bridge on the Dhaka-Faridpur Highway in the Dhuldi area around 2:30pm.

The deceased could not be identified immediately.

Kotwali police station OC FM Nasim said the bus hit the bridge railing before falling into the river, which killed six people on the spot.

The injured were taken to Faridpur Medical College Hospital, where two of them died, he said.

In Nagarkanda upazila, a bus rammed an auto-rickshaw and killed three people, including a woman and her son, on the Dhaka-Barisal Highway.

The deceased are Reshma, 30, her son Rony, 13, and Abul Hossain, said Nagarkanda police station SI Md Abdul Gaffar.

In Dhaka, a man has been killed after getting hit by a motorbike in Trimohoni Bridge area of Khilgaon around 10am on Saturday.

The deceased is Md Sultan, 50, son of Badiuzzaman of Kandar Chargram village under Islampur upazila in Jamalpur. 

He was a day labourer and used to live with his family in a rented apartment in Dhaka's Sabujbagh area.

Confirming the matter to Dhaka Tribune, Khilgaon police station Sub-Inspector (SI) Md Nazmul Alam said: "The incident occurred when Sultan was hit by a motorbike while crossing road. He was severely injured in the incident. Later he was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) where he succumbed to his injuries.

"Upon completion of all legal procedures, the body was handed over to his family," the police official added.

In Narayanganj, a rickshaw-puller has been killed when his rickshaw collided head-on with a three-wheeler in Araihazar upazila in the morning.

The deceased is Ali Azgar, said Araihazar police station OC Nazrul Islam.

In Bogra, an army sergeant has been killed on the spot and five others injured, when a bus overturned on the Rangpur-Bogra Highway in Shibganj upazila.

The deceased, Abdul Aziz, 36, from Lakshmipur, was stationed in Bandarban cantonment.

Gobindaganj highway police SI Mokhlesur Rahman said the accident occurred when the driver of a Rangpur-bound passenger bus coming from Chittagong lost control of the steering wheel, causing the vehicle to turn over and fall into a roadside ditch. 

In Thakurgaon, a night coach collided with a roadside tree and killed the driver's assistant on the Dhaka-Thakurgaon Highway.

The deceased, Yusuf, 38, died on the way to Thakurgaon Adhunik Sadar Hospital, confirmed highway police.

In Pabna, a man has been killed and two others injured when a bus rammed a battery-run van on the Dashuria-Kushtia Highway in Ishwardi upazila in the afternoon.

The deceased is Imon, 20, confirmed Ishwardi police station OC Bahauddin Faruki.

In Dinajpur, a man died after a motorcycle hit him in the Hili college road area in the afternoon.

The deceased, Nazrul Islam, 60, was a day labourer, confirmed Hakimpur police station OC Anwar Hossain.

In Kurigram, a woman has been killed when a motorcycle hit her in the Panimachkuti area of Phulbari upazila in the morning.

The deceased, Fatema Begum, 40, died at Rangpur Medical College Hospital.

In Gazipur, a man was run over by a speeding truck on the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway in Sreepur upazila.

The deceased, Abdus Sattar, 30, was killed on the spot, said Mawna Highway police OC Monjurul Haque.
