UPDF member killed in Rangamati ‘gunfight’

A member of United People's Democratic Front (UPDF) has been killed in a reported gunfight with a patrol team of Bangladesh Army in Rangamati.

The incident occurred in Sajek union of Baghaichhari upazila around 11am Friday. 

The deceased is Shanti Priyo Chakma alias Sumon, 40.

According to sources of Sajek police station, being tipped off about a possible shootout, an Army petrol team conducted a drive in the area. Sensing the presence of army men, terrorists opened fire at them triggering a gunfight. 

Later Army team found the body of Shanti Priyo Chakma and recovered two firearms from the spot. 

Confirming the matter, Sufiullah, additional superintendent police (ASP) of Rangamati, said: "Sajek police recovered the body and sent it to Khagrachari General Hospital morgue for autopsy. Army and police have also enhanced patrolling in the area following the incident."
