The suspect Moniruzzaman was arrested in the early hours of Tuesday
Police arrested a man suspected of instigating another to commit suicide by blackmailing him in the Sreepur upazila of Gazipur.
The suspect Moniruzzaman was arrested in the early hours of Tuesday. He was later produced in court, which sent him to jail in the afternoon.
Rakibul Hasan Hridoy, son of the victim Jamal Uddin, filed the case under the Section 57 of the ICT Act against eight people in the early hours of Tuesday. They include Siyam, 22, Sadek, 25, Rony, 18, Shyamol, 25, and four others unidentified individuals.
According to the case statement Jamal, having previous rivalry with the suspects was assaulted and abducted after a dispute broke out among them over a motorcycle at a local shop on Sunday afternoon. They took him to the nearby forest, where they took off his clothes, took pictures and recorded footage of the incident. Later the suspects demanded Tk2 lakh and threatened to spread the video on the internet, if they were not paid before Monday.
Sreepur police station Sub-Inspector Nayan Bhuiyan said they already arrested one Moniruzzaman in connection with the incident. "Moniruzzaman was produced before the court on Tuesday and the court sent him to jail the same day. Police are trying to arrest the other suspects."
The deceased Jamal's son Hridoy claimed to Dhaka Tribune that his father was raped by the suspects.
