At least hundreds of people were injured in road accidents during the Eid holidays
At least 21 people were killed and many others injured in separate road accidents in Comilla, Tangail, Bogra, Natore, Naogaon, Gopalganj, Gaibandha, Narsingdi, and Manikganj during the Eid-ul-Azha holidays from Monday to Wednesday.
In Comilla, two people including a child were killed and many others were injured in seven separate road accidents on the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway in Chandina upazila during the holidays.
The deceased are Jahangir, 38, and Ibrahim, 6.
Sub-Inspector (SI) Ripon, a local highway police outpost confirmed the incidents and said a local MP Selina Islam was in one of the accident but was unharmed.
Chandina Upazila Health Complex duty doctor said at least 30 injured were being treatment and three with critical injuries were sent to Comilla Medical College Hospital.
In Tangail, three people were killed and 19 others injured in three separate road accidents in Ghatail and Madhupur upazila during the holidays.
In Ghatail upazila, a man was killed and 17 others injured when a passenger bus lost control and overturned on the Tangail-Mymensingh Highway on Tuesday.
In Ghatail’s Chaman Bazar, a man was killed and two others injured when a motorcycle lost control and hit a road-side tree.
Ghatail police station OC Enamul Haque Chowdhury said: “Locals rescued the three and took them to Ghatail Upazila Health Complex, where the duty doctor declared Ashraf Ali, 18, dead.”
In Madhupur upazila, a mentally challenged man was killed when an unidentified vehicle ran him over in Telki area.
Madhupur police station OC Tarik Kamal said: “The deceased is yet to be identified. The body has been sent to the Tangail General Hospital morgue for autopsy.”
In Bogra, four people were killed and 15 others injured in two separate road accidents.
In Aria Bazar, Shajahanpur, a Rangpur-bound Shyamoli Paribahan bus collided head-on with a Dhaka-bound Ahad Enterprise bus on Wednesday.
According to the police, the deceased are, Khairul Anam, 55, his wife Ranu Begum, 50 and the driver of Ahad Enterprise bus. Among the injured, seven are in critical condition.
In Noimile area of Shajahanpur, a rickshaw-van puller, Manik, 30, was killed while crossing the Bogra-Dhaka Highway on Monday.
In Natore, a man was killed and three others injured, when a car collided with a police van on the Bonpara-Hatikumrul Highway in Baraigram upazila around 7am on Wednesday.
The deceased, Shahjahan Sheikh, 50, was the driver of the car.
The three injured are, Assistant Superintendent of Police (Baraigram circle) Harun Or Rashid, bodyguard Ibrahim Hossain, and police-van driver Mobarak Ali. The three injured were taken to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital for better treatment, confirmed Natore Superintendent of police Liton Kumar Saha to Dhaka Tribune.
In Gaibandha, two people were killed and four others injured, when a microbus and CNG-run auto-rickshaw collided head-on in Gaibandha Sadar upazila around 9:45pm on Tuesday.
The auto-rickshaw driver Khorshed Alam died on the spot. The remaining five were taken to the hospital, where another injured, Roman, died around 11pm, said OC Khan Mohammad Shahriar of Gaibandha police station.
He also said police have impounded the microbus. The driver, however, is on the run.
In Naogaon, two people were killed in two separate road accidents during the holidays.
In Manda upazila, a woman, Aklima Begum, 30, was killed when a human hauler overturned and fell into a roadside ditch.
Later, police recovered the body and handed it over to her family.
In Chak Mayram, a 65-year-old elderly named Mohammad Ali died when a motor-cycle ran him over while crossing the Dhamoirhat-Joypurhat Highway.
Locals took the critically injured Ali to the upazila health complex, where the duty doctor declared him dead.
In Gopalganj, two pedestrians were killed in separate accidents in Fukra and Majhigati areas near the Dhaka-Khulna Highway in Kashiani upazila.
Bhanga Highway police OC Md Ataur Rahman said: “The deceased are Kulsum Begum, 72, and an unidentified 32-year-old man. They were hit by a bus while trying to cross the road.”
He said the bodies were sent to Gopalganj General Hospital.
In Narsingdi, two people were killed and three others injured as a bus rammed into a CNG-run auto-rickshaw on the Narsingdi-Monohardi Highway near Shibpur upazila.
The deceased are auto rickshaw driver Ripon Miah, 35, and a university student Lamiya Akhter, 18.
In Manikganj, three cattle traders were killed when the truck carrying them fell into a roadside ditch on the Dhaka-Aricha Highway at Pukuria in Ghior upazila on Monday.
The deceased were identified as Monwar Hossain, 24, Obayed Hossain, 42, and Izahar, 45, of Kushtia district, reports UNB.
Police said there were 18 cattle traders on the truck and two of them were killed on the spot, said Barangail Highway police OC Yamin-ud-Doula.
