The pair went to bathe in the Meghna river on Tuesday afternoon and their bodies were found floating around 3:30pm
Two girls drowned after they went to bathe in the Meghna river at Bancharampur upazila in Brahmanbaria.
The deceased, cousins Samia, 8, and Elma, 9, came to their grandfather's house at Domrakandi village from Dhaka for celebrating Eid-ul-Azha. Both of them were third-graders at a school in the capital.
Abdul Aziz, member of Ward 3 under Pahariakandi Union Parishad, said the pair went to bathe in the river near their house around 1:30pm on Tuesday without telling anyone at home.
Their family members began searching for them when they went missing.
Around 3:30pm, their bodies were found floating in the river, he added.
Bancharampur police station Officer-in-Charge Md Salah Uddin confirmed the incident.
