BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said the government has failed to ensure a hassle-free and safe journey to holidaymakers ahead of Eid-ul-Azha.

"Homegoers are being stranded on roads for hours and, in some cases, it is taking a whole day for them to reach home due to massive tailbacks. Such long traffic congestion is occurring not only because of the dilapidated road conditions, but also extortions on highways," he told reporters at his residence in Thakurgaon's Fakirpara area around 11am on Sunday.

He came down heavily on the government for the debacle of train schedule and long tailbacks on highways, which has caused immense sufferingto thousands of home going passengers.

On the issue of the dengue outbreak, Fakhrul said: "If the government had shown some responsibility by taking timely measures to prevent the dengue outburst, so many lives could have been saved."

Fakhrulalso called on the international community, including the United Nations, to come forward in resolving the Kashmir issue by givingpriority to the interest of the Kashmiris.

He said: "Our constitution saysto not meddle with the internal affairs of another country, but it also says to support an oppressed nation or race fighting for independence."

Fakhrul urged all sides concerned to come forward with patience to lessen the plight of the people of Kashmir.

The Kashmir conflict between India and Pakistan goes back many years, but the international community has never properly recognized the oppression faced by the Kashmiri people, he said.

He demanded the immediate release of the BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, who is very sick and being held unjustly in jail, he mentioned.

The BNP leader also greeted the countrymen on the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha to be celebrated across the country on Monday.
