Jamalpur boat capsize: 24 rescued

At least 5 passengers still missing

A total of 24 people were rescued from the Jamuna River on Wednesday night and yesterday, after a boat capsized in the Jamuna river in Dewanganj upazila, Jamalpur. 

The boat, which was carrying rice for VGF program along with 30 people, was heading to Char Halka from Futani Bazar when it sank around 8:30pm, due to bad weather.

Dewanganj police station OC MM Moinul Islam said: “The remaining six passengers are still missing.”

The missing were identified as: Shahid Shikdar, 45, Kanchan Mala, 45, Rozia, 45, Noyon, 8, Dulal, 30, and Akan, 65. 

Locals, river police, and fire services have combined their efforts in the rescue operations.

Jamalpur Fire Service Senior Station Officer Nur Uddin said: “The rescue mission has been temporarily put on hold due to inclement weather. The search operation will be resumed as soon as the weather condition improves.” 

Trawler capsize in the Bay of Bengal

A fishing trawler capsized during a storm in Pakhidia area of the Bay of Bengal yesterday afternoon.

Barguna Fishing Trawler Owners’ Association President Golam Mostafa said: “A fishing trawler carrying 12 fishermen sank in the Bay of Bengal around 2:30pm on Thursday.

An hour after the capsize nine fishermen were rescued, but three remain missing till now, he added.
