The deceased was identified as Ashraful Islam
A suspected drug dealer was killed in a reported gunfight with the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in Sreepur upazila of Gazipur, early yesterday.
The deceased was identified as Ashraful Islam, 34, confirmed RAB 2 Company Commander Mohiuddin Faruque.
He said: “Acting on a tip-off about drugs being smuggled into Dhaka from Chuadanga, a RAB team set up a check post on the Dhaka-Tangail Highway near the Gazipur Chourasta area around 5am on Tuesday.
“A private car ran through the barricades and headed for Sreepur’s Mawna Chourasta area around 12pm. When the RAB team chased the vehicle, shots were fired from the moving vehicle, compelling the RAB to fire in retaliation.”
Ashraful was hit and killed on the spot. RAB recovered a revolver, four bullets, and 100 phensedyl bottles from his car, he added.
Sreepur police station Inspector (Operations) Aktar Hossain said: “The body of the deceased has been taken to Gazipur Shahid Tazuddin Ahmed Medical College and Hospital morgue for autopsy. A case is being prepared to be filed.”
