Political enmity believed to be the probable cause behind the murder

An Awami League (AL) activist has been killed by a group of miscreants in Bagerhat on Tuesday night.

The deceased was identified as Salam Sardar, 40, a local AL activist from Ramchandrapur union of Bagerhat.

Witnesses said a group of 10 to 12 miscreants entered Salam’s house and started beating Lokman, the deceased's brother.

"Salam went to rescue his brother but the miscreants stabbed him to death, and dropped his body in a nearby pond," the witness told Dhaka Tribune. 

Police recovered four mini gas cylinders, several sharp weapons and bamboo sticks from the house. 

Meanwhile, at least 12 people, including five women and three children, during the incident. 

The injured were-- Shamim Sardar, 24; Jannati Begum, 19; Ismail Sardar, 50; Rakib Sardar, 14; Mojam Sardar, 50; Lokman Sardar, 40, Monju Begum, 50, Rina Begum, and Rexona Begum. 

The deceased's cousin Sagar Sardar confirmed that Salam was pronounced dead by on-duty doctors at Khulna Medical College and Hospital the early hours of Wednesday. 

Two people named Montu Molla and Zafar Shekh were arrested regarding the attack, said Morelganj police station Officer-in-charge (OC) KM Azizul Islam Salam. 

"During 2001 national election, a member of our family was killed by BNP-Jamaat activists. I believe the accused of that murder case orchestrated my husband's murder based on that feud," the deceased's wife Rexona Begum told Dhaka Tribune.

Police recovered four mini gas cylinders, several sharp weapons and bamboo sticks from the house.
