A rape accused has been killed in a reported gunfight with Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in Patiya upazila of Chittagong.

The incident took place in Maliara village Kusumpura union in the early hours of Tuesday.

The deceased was identified as Md Arman, 25. He was accused in a case filed over the rape of a girl of eighth grade in that village on July 19.

Confirming the matter to Dhaka Tribune, RAB 7 Assistant Director Mashkur Rahman said a RAB patrol team conducted a drive at the village in the early hours to arrest Arman.

Realizing that law enforcement was present, Arman and his cohorts opened fire at the RAB members, forcing them to return fire in self-defence.

Arman was found dead at the scene after the gunfight, Mashkur said, adding that they also recovered a firearm and seven bullets from the spot.

The body was later sent to Chittagong Medical College Hospital for an autopsy.
