Man sets wife on fire in Madaripur

A man doused his wife in kerosene and lit her on fire in Shibchar upazila of Madaripur.

This incident took place around 10pm on Monday.

Confirming the matter, acting officer-in-charge of Shibchar police station Md Jakir Hossain Molla said: "I heard about the incident immediately sent a team there." 

Upon hearing her screams, locals rushed in and took Khadija Akhter, heavily burnt, to the Shibchar Upazila Health Complex around 11pm. The husband, Nasir Fakir, fled the area after the incident.

Dr Mokaddes Ali Shahin at the health complex said: "The fire has burnt the right side of her lower chest, and the left side of her belly."

According to locals, Nasir and Khadija used to lived in a rented house in Shibchar upazila's Bashkandi union with a their three-month-old child. 

Nasir used to regularly beat Kadija without any reason. They used to fight often about many things including their financial hardships, locals claimed.

On Monday night, Nasir lit his wife on fire around 10pm. When the locals gathered hearing the screams of Khadija, Nasir fled the scene, acting OC Jakir said. 

Kadija said: "My husband does not do any work. He often beats me. He lit me on fire at one stage of a fight."
