Seven killed in road accidents

In Kurigram, four people have been killed, including three members of a family, as the auto-rickshaw carrying them was hit by a bus in the Sadar upazila

At least seven people were killed and five others injured in separate road accidents in three districts.

The incidents occurred in Kurigram Sadar upazila, Sylhet Sadar upazila, and Madaripur on Friday.

In Kurigram, four people have been killed, including three members of a family, as the auto-rickshaw carrying them was hit by a bus in the Sadar upazila.

The incident took place in Kathalbari College area on the Kurigram-Rangpur Highway Friday morning.

The deceased are- Mostafa, 42, his wife Josna, 32, and his grandmother Amena, 75. The other victim was the auto-rickshaw driver Manik, 35.

Five other passengers were also injured, of which, two are in critical condition.

Following the incident, locals rescued the injured to Kurigram Sadar Hospital where three family members succumbed to injuries and auto-rickshaw driver Manik died after being transferred to Rangpur Medical College and Hospital.

Kurigram Sadar police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Raju Sarkar said: “Police seized the bus but the driver managed to escape. A case is being filed in this regard.”

Angry locals blocked the highway, halting traffic for half hour following the incident.

In Sylhet, two people were killed and three others injured in head-on collision between two microbuses on Sylhet-Dhaka Highway Friday afternoon.

The deceased were identified as Salma Begum, 30 and her daughter Habiba, 6, from Sylhet Sadar upazila.

Quoting locals, police said a Bishwanath upazila-bound microbus collided head-on with another microbus at lalbazar area killing a woman and her daughter on the spot.

The injured are receiving treatment at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, said Additional Deputy Commissioner Md Jedan Al Musa of Sylhet Metropolitan Police.

In Madaripur, a two-year-old child died on the spot after she fell of a human haulier on the Pachhar-Shibchar road in Shibchar upazila.

The deceased Mariam, 2, was travelling with her family to Madaripur from Kathalbari ghat, said Shibchar police OC Jakir Hossain.
